DIY: jewel colored planter

I have been working on turning my apartment into an eclectic bohemian wonderland.  Being on a true hippie budget, it’s been going slow. Like continental drift slow.  So I have had an ugly plastic planter hanging in my window for about 2 years now. Which, incidentally is cracked on the bottom from an attempt to hang it when we moved in.  So, actually,  I’ve had an ugly cracked plastic planter hanging in my living room.

I’ve been looking at planters ever since the last one plummeted to the floor.  But why are good looking planters so expensive? Is it just that EVERYTHING is expensive now?  Because it often feels that way.  And I’m a crazy internet window shopper.  So I’ve probably pondered about 500 of them.  And in the end I bought…another ugly  $5 plastic planter.

Sometimes the simplest solutions are the hardest to arrive at. Do you ever find yourself thinking if it isn’t complicated or intricate it can’t be good? And I do have a tendency to overdo things.  So it took me a really, really long time to realize I could just spray paint a cheap one.

I used Rust-oleum 2x ultra cover paint + primer spray paint, which claims it bonds to plastic.  My original plan for this planter was to spray paint it white, then tape off a cute herringbone pattern, then spray paint the blue on top (Wouldn’t that have looked terrific? And see, complicated!).  But no matter how carefully I pulled the tape off, the underlying paint came off with it. So  it does bond to plastic. Just not in a marriage bond sort of way; more the way you bond with a new friend after a few drinks.  Seems like it’s sticking, but don’t put it through too much.  So I went with a solid blue called Lagoon in satin finish.  One can of spray paint, 2 coats and done.   The only thing I did to the planter first was tape off the inside using a plastic bag.  Because I”m guessing spray paint isn’t good for your plants.
