Easter egg bath bombs

  I was so tickled by  the marshmallow eggs I made in my last post, that I wanted to try using the plastic eggs as molds again.  So I decided to make some bath bombs…again.  These are the other thing I make all the time.  One, because they’re easy yet seem impressive (my mantra), and secondly, because my daughter is a  bath bomb junkie.  So I can spend her college fund at Lush, or make them myself.

Everything you need to make them is probably kicking around your house already, EXCEPT the essential oil (which makes them smell nice but technically not necessary) and the citric acid, which you absolutely need.  The cheapest way to get your hands on some is to buy it at a wine making store or online.  But if you need to make these now, you can also find citric acid in the grocery store by the canning supplies.

ingredients:

makes about 8 medium eggs

• 1 c. baking soda
• 1/2 c. citric acid
• 1/2 c. cornstarch
• 1/4 c. Epsom salt
• 2 tbl. baby oil
• 1 tsp. witch hazel
• 1 tsp. essential oil for scent
• food coloring(optional)

  Whisk all your dry ingredients in a medium bowl.  If you want to skip the cornstarch or the Epsom salts, go ahead.  As long as you keep a ratio of 2 parts baking soda to 1 part citric acid, these will work.  You can also use a nicer oil than baby oil, like jojoba or coconut.  You could even use olive oil.  I use baby oil because it’s cheap and I have it around the house.  But feel free to get fancy.

  Now mix all your wet ingredients into a separate bowl.  I added 8 drops of food coloring to my wet ingredients.  Add the wet to the dry, a little at a time.  Stir while adding the liquid so your mixture doesn’t fizz.  Keep adding liquid until mixture sticks together in a clump when you squeeze it (You may not need all the liquid).

 Pack the bath bomb mixture into your plastic eggs fairly firmly.  Let dry overnight.  To unmold, carefully unmold the short end of the egg, then gently pull the bath bomb out of the mold.

  Once you use the eggs for bath bombs, don’t put candy in them.  They take on the smell of the essential oils.
