make your own snow globe

I have been wanting to make snow globes for years.  Somehow, the project always got moved aside for other things.  Then my daughter saw a crafting show that taught how to make them, and she wanted to do it.  So we got some jars, and some cute things to put inside, and the glitter and glycerin.  It turned out to be a little trickier than I thought.

A few tips:  make sure you can fit the object inside your jar! Obvious, right?  I started with that little deer in the background.  It was a little tricky closing the jar around the head, but he fit inside.  Then I put the water in, and it became almost impossible, and a HUGE mess!

Then I tried gluing an ornament inside.  The bottom wasn’t flat, but it stayed glued on.  Until I shook it. Off it went!  So pick something that has a  wide flat surface on the bottom.

I also had a little salt shaker, so I put a mini pine cone in it.  Adorable, until the water started to turn brown! I was starting to feel like I was chasing windmills.

The mini tree was, finally, a success!  Here’s how to do it:

supplies

  • tight sealing jar
  • waterproof object
  • epoxy glue(like krazy glue)
  • sandpaper
  • glitter
  • glycerin(optional)

I used a mason jar, so the first thing I did was to glue the inside top of the jar to the ring.  I screwed the lid onto the jar tightly to dry to make a tight seal on the lid.  Then I used the sandpaper to sand the bottom of the tree and the inside of the lid so it would hold better.  Be sure to brush away any grit.  Glue your object to the center of the lid.  Give it a little time to dry.  Fill the jar with water, add glitter and about a 1/4 tsp. of glycerin(this helps the glitter fall more slowly, but you can skip it if you want). Apply glue to the top and side rim of the jar.  Screw on, let dry and shake!

*If you need to get the jar open after you glue it shut, you can submerge the lid in nail polisher remove that has acetone(regular polish remover won’t work).  Leave overnight, and by morning you should be able to open it.
